The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas follows sixteen year old Starr, who is stuck living between two worlds. One being the poor neighborhood where she lives with her family and the other being the fancy upper class school that she attends. It becomes even harder for Starr to balance her two lives when she witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer.
Shortly after, Khalil's death makes national headlines and chaos breaks out. Many want to know what actually happened that night, while others simply accuse Khalil of being a drug dealer or a thug. Starr is torn about whether she should share her perspective of the story or simply remain anonymous to protect her identity.
This is an incredibly powerful book that you will absolutely not be able to put down. Also, read it before the movie adaptation comes out in theatres October 19th.
